About the Position

SARAO has an exciting opportunity for an Optical Engineer to join our Cape Town based team. The successful incumbent will be responsible for design, implementation, verification and integration of optical systems and sub-systems, particularly fibre optics for radio astronomy applications.




Minimum education requirements:

MSc or MEng in Electronics Engineering specialising in Fibre Optics



Minimum work experience required:

Master's degree with 3 years' work experience or PhD in a related field



Duties include (but not limited to):

Leading a small team with a focus on fibre optics systems
Supporting existing systems as and when required
Designing, implementing and supporting optical networks
Providing project management support
Conducting optics and fibre research
The ideal candidate will have the following competencies:

Ability

work independently as well as in a team environment
handle multiple tasks
work in remote locations when required
communicate effectively in English (both written and verbally)
Experience

using system engineering methods in complex projects
Opto-electronics
Knowledge
