Position Purpose :

To lead in all environmental management systems processes and initiatives aimed at enforcing and ensuring compliance to
legal and other requirements including the ISO 14001:2004 standard;

Undertake activities aimed at entrenching of environmental management practices and regulatory compliance through the
analysis and treatment of environmental risk attached to any process, asset, or stakeholder activity that may result in

environmental degradation or impact negatively on the ports bio-diversity, the organizations reputation; and

Ensure sustainable utilization of the natural resources in a manner that fulfils the mission and strategic goals of the
organization.

Position outputs :

 

 

To provide quantitative and qualitative strategic environmental assessments of projects, leading and facilitating the required

course of action;

Coordinate/Initiate Environmental Assessments and ensure that outcomes form inputs into TNPA
Develop terms of reference for environmental impact studies, specialist studies and monitoring programmes;
Review government’s Environmental Management programmes/plans and ensure that new requirements are proactively
incorporated into strategic environmental management plans in TNPA;
Investigate technical solutions or best practice in terms of environmental management, resource management and
sustainability solutions;

Research and develop environmental best practice initiatives to comply or be in line with domestic and international
protocols, Transnet strategies, policies and strategic objectives;

Develop and implement education and awareness training programmes for best practices in order to improve performance
of the organisation;

Work closely with Projects office to ensure that correct specialist studies are identified with the appointed EAP for all EIA
projects;

Play an active role in infrastructure project development by offering technical environmental inputs in all phases of the
projects.

Monitor compliance with Environmental Authorisation requirements for all projects during and post projects implementation;
Liaise with relevant competent authorities on environmental related issues;
Identify areas of research and investigation relevant to improve Transnet National Ports Authority environmental
performance;

Review specialist reports, i.e. Air Quality, Marine and Sediment, Groundwater Contamination, etc.
Qualifications & Experience :

Grade 12 (Matric);
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management or relevant environmental qualification;
Valid Driver’s Licence; and
Minimum of 4 years in the Environmental Management Field (Exposure to Port Operations will be an advantage);
Competencies :

KNOWLEDGE:

Environmental Impact Assessment Processes and NEMA EIA Regulations;
Working knowledge of South African Environmental legislation;
ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems;
Environmental Risk Assessment practices and principles;
Environmental sustainability/ biodiversity management;
