What Is the Basic Education Employment Initiative?
The Basic Education Employment Initiative is a government programme that gives unemployed youth a chance to work in public schools. Through this initiative, youth are placed in schools as assistants. They help with teaching, learning, and school operations – and in return, they get trained and paid.
If your SAYouth Teacher Assistant Application is successful, you will receive:
A monthly stipend of R4 000 (after 1% UIF deduction)
R30 worth of data per month for communication and online learning
Positions Available Under Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI)
There are two types of jobs available for applicants:
1. Education Assistants (EA)
Perfect for those who want to work closely with teachers and learners. These roles include:
Curriculum Assistants – Help teachers with learning material and classroom support.
Reading Champions – Help learners improve reading and literacy skills.
e-Cadres – Assist with ICT and digital tools in classrooms.
Care & Support Assistants – Provide basic psychological and emotional support to learners.
Laboratory Assistants – Help science teachers set up practical lessons.
Workshop Assistants – Support technical and practical learning activities.
You must have a matric certificate to apply for these roles.
2. General School Assistants (GSA)
These positions are more hands-on and are ideal if you like fixing things or working outdoors.
Handymen/Women – Assist with basic maintenance and repairs.
Cleaners – Help keep the school clean and hygienic.
Sports & Enrichment Assistants – Support sports, arts, and cultural programmes.
Some roles under this category do not require a matric certificate.
Who Can Apply for Basic Education Employment Initiative?
You are eligible to apply if:
You are a South African citizen aged 18–34
You are currently unemployed
You are not studying or receiving NSFAS
You live within 5 km of an urban school or 30 km of a rural/farm school
You have a South African ID or valid permit
You have a valid cellphone number and bank account
You did not participate in PYEI Phase I, II, or III
